“Cori?”

I blinked awake, my face pressed to something rough and scratchy. I’d fallen asleep on the living room floor. I sat up, rubbing my cheek where it’d brushed against the rough carpet. Zeph sat in the armchair we’d left him in in while we waited for the antidote to take effect. Neither he nor Ember had woken up last night, and from Ember’s inert state on the sofa, there’d been no change.

“Where am I?” Zeph blinked at me, his grey eyes sleepy.

“You’re at my house,” I said. “Well, technically, it’s Will’s house.”

“Didn’t recognise it in the dark.” He leaned forward, frowning at Ember’s sleeping form. “Has she woken up yet?”

“I don’t think so.” My chest tightened. She’d had a worse dose of the poison than Zeph had, and Will had said she might take another day to wake up. I’d offered to watch her overnight and must have dozed off.

Zeph ran a hand over the place where the dart had torn a hole in his grey hoody. “Damn close call there.”

“Yeah…” I tore my gaze from Ember. “Glad the antidote worked. How’re you feeling?”

“Hungry.” He eyed the box of cold pizza leftover from yesterday evening. “Can I warm that up?”

“What, by breathing fire on it?”

“Nah, I don’t do that in the house. Safety hazard.”

A smile tugged at my mouth. “I guess it is.”

I climbed to my feet, stretching. My neck ached from lying on the floor, but I was glad I’d showered last night to wash the taint of the gargoyles’ blood. After checking Zeph knew how to use the microwave, I went to my room to change, stopping to have a quick wash in the bathroom. Sleeping on the floor had left a pink mark on my cheek and my eyes didn’t look any brighter after my shift, but with any luck, the claws were the first sign of something more.

Vaguely refreshed, I returned to the main room to find Zeph leaning back against the kitchen counter as though he lived here. Dragons tended to relax around our own kind in a way that we rarely achieved with other people. I’d forgotten how few dragon shifters around my own age I’d met. Lorne had forced most dragons who were capable of fighting to serve him or die. They could have used someone like Zeph in the village, actually—young, strong and capable. Emphasis on the ‘strong’ part. It was unfair. I hadn’t inherited any of those genes at all. His muscular arms were thicker than my neck.

He raised an eyebrow, seeing me staring. “Something up?”

I shrugged. “Weird coincidence, isn’t it? Of all the people to run into, it had to be the only other dragon shifters in the city.”

“I’ve been living near London for a couple of years and I’ve never crossed paths with any of you,” he said. “Met plenty of other supernaturals, and humans, but never anyone like me.”

I tapped a foot, not sure what to say. I’d often missed the company of my own kind, but with Ember, I was never really alone.
